Description

Graphite and Charcoal drawing OF 'Maharaja Ranjit Singh' which took approximatley 110 hours over 13 days on an A2 (420x594mm) paper.

Maharaja Ranjit Singh (13 November 1780 – 27 June 1839), who was also know as the 'Shere-e-Punjab' (Lion of Punjab) was the founder of the Sikh Empire.  Which came to power in the Indian subcontinent in the early half of the 19th century. And was based in the Punjab region, and existed from 1799 to 1849. It was forged, on the foundations of the Dal Khalsa, under the leadership of Ranjit Singh from a collection of autonomous Sikh Misls.

There have been lots of paintings of Maharaja Ranjit Singh done after his death but only a few during his lifetime. But most of these do not portray him accurately, as he had suffered from smallpox when he was younger which left him blind in one eye and left his skin full of pockmarks. And like allot of other great military leaders from history like napeolean etc, he was described as being small in stature but is normally painted as large in stature.

Maharaja Ranjit singh had a mighty and well-trained army which was formidable even for the all powerful British forces . So the British rulers dared not attack the Punjab during his life time. His army was trained by the French and other European generals. Although his rule was called the Khalsa Raj, which is name of the sikh warriors, it was actually a 'secular' and equitable state. There were people from all religions and backgrounds in his cabinet like Fakir Azizuddin who wielded a great power in his cabinet, was a living example of his secular credentials.

Maharaja Ranjit Singh is remembered for uniting the Punjab as a strong nation and his possession of the Koh-i-Noor diamond. His most lasting legacy was the golden beautification of the Harmandir Sahib, most revered Gurudwara of the Sikhs, with marble and gold, from which the popular name of the "Golden Temple" is derived.

Maharaja Ranjit Singh was to become the last Indian ruler of the Punjab. As the unity he created evaporated after his death in 1839 and resulted in-fighting. This ultimately resulted in the loss of the second Anglo-Sikh war and the British army taking control of his empire.
