'Denzel Washington' graphite drawing

Description

I've chose to draw Denzel Washington firstly because i wanted to practice dark skin tones again after drawing 'Rihanna'. But also because his a great actor and was in one of my favourite movies 'Training Day', in which he deservedly one an oscar.

One thing that i must point out which may seem odd as it can ruin a drawing, is that i am trying to replicate the backgrounds however odd, distracting or strange (like this one) is from the reference photo (and not always succesfully). As the easy route would be to put a black background (which looks great) on all my portraits or leave it blank, but i'm determined to try and copy a photo with faults and all.

Once again drawing older people makes it easier to make them look more realistic because of all the lines and wrinkles. And i feel i'm speeding up when drawing as it only took me 23 hours rather than the usual 25-30 hours.

Here are some of my other graphite drawings.

Consistently, your drawings are amazing, and you pick fantastic people to raw, but for this drawing, I really think the background in the fourth quadrant detracts from Denzel's face. It's very abstract and not defined, contrasting the rest of the drawing. Maybe you could change the background to a car seat head or something more "defined."

I'm not sure if you were going for a certain style and the neck was done very wrinkly on purpose, but that part is very untrue to real life. His attributes in this picture give off an 80 year old feel, when in reality he is only 58. I can't decide whether or not I like that part, because when I first looked at I disliked it very much, but now, a couple hours later, it has started to grow on me. The proportions of his face seem a little off; his forehead looks a teeny bit "taller" than it should be.

Sidenote: His ear on the right side of the paper seems like it should be showing more. And there is one hair that is sticking out of his head,

To avoid being all negative, I would also like to include a list of things I really liked. First, his eyebrows are so real. I can almost see him coming to life in this picture. His teeth and mouth are near perfect, capturing the scar and skin stress points perfectly. The shadows in the ear are precise and pristine, and his hair is very accurate. Maybe you could experiment a little more with the glints in his eyes?

Unlike your Rihanna portrait and your Iron Man portrait, this portrait has less of a striking impact. It isn't a bad work, in fact it definitely touches on hyperrealism, but it isn't something I could look at for a long time; the impact is not great. A simpler background would help improve this.

Another great one! Keep it up!
