Description

Now that I've finished this drawing, I can see what areas I have improved on and what still needs to be worked on. Overall i'm happy with the outcome and the progress I've made from my original drawing of 'Al Pacino' 5 months ago. And the addition of charcoal for the darks and rougher cartridge paper has made a difference. I will probably do the pros and cons of charcoal and cartridge paper in the future.

The reason I decided to redraw my 'Al Pacino' portrait fav.me/d5zhsod, that I originally done 5 months ago was for a number of reasons. Firstly I always really liked this drawing and regretted doing it on a small A4 rather than A3, So I was always planning to redraw it on A bigger A3 paper, so now was a good a time as any.

Secondly Its also a really great drawing to test out big contrasts between dark and light. I originally tested this with graphite on this drawing, but now I want to test charcoal and graphite on cartridge paper. And lastly I feel its a good way to see how much I've really improved. And as the original still a good drawing, it will not be easy for me to drastically improve on or beat. And will therefore show me what areas I have to still work on.

The drawing was done on A3 cartridge paper, using graphite and charcoal pencils. Approx 30-35 hoUrs to complete.

Here are some of my other graphite drawings.

When I compare your first version to this one I saw the subtle improvements that made this one look better. Your eyes are not as flat or cornered, they are rounded out. the charcoal increased the effect of light and dark contrasts, the hands appear softer visually compared to some of the semi-harsh lines in the other one. the detail is beautiful, you can see this in the forehead, ring, and beard, compared to the older version, you took your time, its looks more natural in size and perspective. the beard doesn't look rushed, the skin appears more realistic. Great JOB!!!
