'Uma Thurman' graphite portrait

Description

My last drawing of 'Ellen Page' turned out to be a big disapointment as i rushed the background and ended up ruining the drawing. So this time i took it a bit slower so that i did not make the same mistake again. Overall i'm pretty happy with how this turned out (which is rare), and it could be my favourite female portrait that i've done so far. And i've now realised that drawing blonde hair is alot less hassle that drawing dark hair.

I'm also not going to be able to draw for about 2 weeks after finishing this drawing as i'm going to be way to busy. On top of being to busy my most anticipated game and film are both coming out this week, 'the last of us' and 'the man of steel'. Which i will defintely be doing some fanart for in the near future.

Here are some of my other graphite drawings.

Well, as always, this is how it goes. Negatives to positives.
First off, what I think is: another good job. However there are a few things that strike me as a little weird.

The hair on the left on her shoulder looks weird to me, and looks out of place. Not because of texture or shape + perspective, but rather colour wise and shadows etc. It looks a LITTLE "plonked" on rather than actually being "blended" in.

Next would be the lips. Most of it is good but the white "outline" on the top looks little too defined for me. Especially the left top side. Thus making it look weird.

Thirdly would be the skin texture on her arm. The arm's texture looks only looks a little weird at the bottom due to there being lots of "rounded" lines which, in my opinion looks a little odd for some skin. However, aside from that it looks fine.

I also think that the neck looks slightly too simple in terms of shape. I see you added some highlights and shadows for it, but to me it looks a little too simple like a cylinder compared to a neck's bumps etc. Thats just my opinion, others may see things differently.

Next, the shirt part on the right looks very plain compared to the shirt texture on the left. I'm not quite sure what's going on there to be honest.

One thing that also strikes me is her hand. The fingers look weird in shape, rather, the index finger. It looks half deformed to me. I'm not sure if this is correct to the reference shot, but it just looks awkward to have a finger like that in my opinion.

The last negative for me would be the hair in general. I'm judging harshly this time. I know that you do hair quite well indeed. You have definitely improved, but theres this major thing that isn't there in my opinion. That would be the "wispyness" of it all. The hair you draw have awesome shape and nice detail and shadows + highlights, but they mostly look "blocky" rather than wispy. You have definitely enhanced the look with stray hairs here and there, and that is good! However, the main part of the hair itself doesn't look wispy to me. Namely, the middle part and the part on left side of the portrait. Also the eyebrows look a little too defined in shape, well, I think this applies to the right eyebrow from the viewers perspective. It looks weird to me because the hair just "cuts" off and conforms to the shape perfectly.

Now for the positives.

I would like to say that I enjoyed staring at the texture you put into the shirt on the left, haha. To me it looks very nice, and pretty much real to be honest. I can almost feel it in my hands. Very nicely done <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b…" width="15" height="15" alt=":D" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=":D (Big Grin)"/>.

Secondly, you have nailed the eyes again, you are just amazing with them. They truly bring the portrait to life <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt=":)" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="391" title=":) (Smile)"/>.

Of course other shiny things like the texture of the lips, chain, earrings and bracelet all have nice shadows and highlights. I really like the lip texture though, I think you did an awesome job with them besides that one detail stated in the negatives section.

I also think that this time you got the balance between the detail of skin texture and hair down quite well. They blend in well even though the "roughness" of the skin was mostly removed compared to your other portraits. It's funny actually. Removing some detail sometimes makes it look more realistic.

Anyway, awesome job on this one as always, and I can't wait to see your next portrait! <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b…" width="15" height="15" alt=":D" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=":D (Big Grin)"/>. Keep practicing <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b…" width="15" height="15" alt=":D" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=":D (Big Grin)"/>.
