'Emma Stone' graphite portrait by Pen-Tacular-Artist 'Emma Stone' graphite portrait by Pen-Tacular-Artist
After finally getting to grasps with the basics of drawing portraits i decided to have a short break. But i'm now back to try and push myself to the next level by really concentrateing on 'skin textures'. Although i'm ok doing skin textures on men, i'm not so comfortable doing them on women.

I chose 'emma stone' for a number of reasons, with the main being that she has alot of freckles and detail on her skin. Secondly because she was one of the first drawings i attempted to do skin textures on 6 months ago when i first started using graphite, you can see it here [link]. And lastly because she's a really good actress, who i haven't seen do a bad film so far.

My break also lasted a bit longer than planned as i've got a 'callus' on my finger, from drawing so much. It's still there, and can be irrating but i waited long enough for it clear up, and just couldn't wait any longer.

Here are some of my other graphite drawings.

:star: Noticed several subtle improvements since last I commented on your work. first and foremost:

1. The high-key tonal value range is getting much better. Keep up the efforts to model those lighter tones so they look 3D and really pop. That's a tough nut to crack in your media.

2. Great job on the hair; variation in the length of strands and locks as well as twists, curls and overlapping have a nice balance and depth. More importantly, they are starting to have weight and tension that feels like the real thing.

3. Texture on the skin and specular highlights are noteworthy too. Dig the changes in tone of the freckles as they are affected by light and location.

:star: Three things to improve:

1. Teeth should darken ever so slightly as they recede to the back of the jaw. Lips and inside of the cheek will cast a shadow and the jaw is curved so those in front are brightest. Teeth in as a whole will still look white due to contrast of the surrounding areas.

2. Collar bone and neck need to show more evidence of anatomical forms. sternomastoid [link] and clavicle [link] should be prominent.

3. Dark shape behind the head throws the balance off a bit. Creates a sense of too much weight over her head. You can still balance this with some dark middle tones on her left in the background. I recommend abstract soft focus shapes. Best to try on tracing paper first and overlay to see if the shapes work for the rest of the design before adding to your picture.

Good success!

I'm not really a big fan of Emma Stone. Heck I don't think I've seen any of her movies either. nevertheless, this is a real good likeness. The hair texture is great as usual, the eyes are real great too. Plus you are getting better and better at drawing lips.
I like the detailing you have done on her earrings too. But I have one suggestion, maybe you should ease up on drawing all the flaws in the skin, I do realise that you are trying to be as realistic as possible but sometimes it doesn't have to be that real either.
Anyway that's just my opinion. Nevertheless, stunning artwork as usual. Great job! :D

Man, freckles are hard to do. It's really difficult to make them look natural.
